A true pillar of house music, Joe Smooth has been DJing since 1983. Starting out in Chicago, he was part of a small circle of producers, alongside heavy hitters Frankie Knuckles and Marshall Jefferson, who effectively invented the genre. His 1987 record "Promised Land" remains one of house's defining moments, ranking #20 on Mixmag's "100 Greatest Dance Singles of All Time" and #4 on DJ Mag's "Top 100 Club Tunes". Beyond the club, his production credits include gold- and platinum-certified work in collaboration with Whitney Houston and Destiny's Child.

Founded by Abraham Oyewo, Jane Evans and Ewald Schrader, two Irish, one Dutch, the label brings together years spent across club culture, artist development and the business of music. Their ethos is based around backing records with feeling and giving artists room to go somewhere new.
The label's tagline, Find Yourself a Friend, is a nod to music's power to build community, bring people together and spark lifelong friendships that begin on the dancefloor and carry on long after the lights come up.
Mercy opens its catalogue with Joe Smooth, one of house music's founding fathers and an architect of its sound, stepping into fresh, jazz-led territory.
